The Test That Shocked Australia
CHOICE recently tested 21 popular sunscreens you’d typically find on supermarket and pharmacy shelves. These included well-known brands and household names, all claiming to offer SPF 50+ broad-spectrum protection.
The results? Only 4 sunscreens passed the test. The rest didn’t meet the SPF level advertised on the packaging. Some failed to deliver the required UVA/UVB protection, while others tested significantly lower than their stated SPF, putting everyday Australians at risk, without them even knowing.

Why This Matters
Sunscreen is often our first (and only) line of defence when heading outdoors. But when it fails, so does our protection. In a country where 2 in 3 Australians are diagnosed with skin cancer by age 70, this is more than a quality control issue, it’s a public health concern.
The truth is, even the best sunscreen has limitations. It can rub off, sweat off, wash off, or be applied too thinly. And now, we know we can’t even trust all brands to deliver what they promise on the label.
A Smarter Way to Stay Sun Safe
At Sun Ray, we created a range of UPF 50+ clothing to help you stay protected, effortlessly. Unlike sunscreen, UPF clothing doesn’t wear off. It doesn’t need reapplying. And it’s been independently tested to block 98% of harmful UVA and UVB rays.
Sun protection shouldn’t be a gamble. That’s why we believe in taking a layered approach:
✅ Quality sunscreen from trusted brands
✅ Shade and smart timing outdoors
✅ Sun protective clothing you can count on
